AppleAppIcon Preview of My Vacation HD for iPad

Forgive me for being a bit quiet - but with good reason.  I have just submitted My Vacation HD to Apple which hopefully will be approved in the next week, and available in the App Store thereafter for $4!  I wasn't immediately onto the iPad bandwagon - there was too much to focus on with the iPhone app.  However, after buying one back in May I quickly went about porting the app.  So what were the main drivers for doing this?

  1. The size of the screen.  Showing off photos and trip playbacks will obviously be more satisfying on the 10 inch screen.

  2. The size of the keyboard.  I understand it is not easy to type on the iPhone, regardless of how nimble your fingers are.  I did an article below on Bluetooth keyboards, but the iPad will be another way to type in a journal with normal sized keys.

  3. Further security for your vacation data.  You can transfer over holidays from My Vacation on the iPhone to My Vacation HD over wireless or Bluetooth.

  4. The Apple Camera Connection Kit can link your dedicated camera to your iPad.  If you have room to take your iPad with you on holiday you can be writing up your travelogue at an idle moment whilst on vacation - perfect for those who are not happy with the photo quality from an iPhone.

Onto the app itself.  All the features have been ported from the iPhone app, although clearly the iPad doesn't have a camera, so all imports are from the iPad Photos app, or from Wi-Fi/Bluetooth transfer from another My Vacation app.

No Universal App?  I put a lot of thought into whether to make the app Universal i.e. if you own the iPhone app you own the iPad one.  However, it didn't make sense for a few reasons:

  1. The sample trip has higher resolution graphics included to make use of the iPad screen resolution.  This would have significantly increased download times for iPhone users, if all was to be bundled into a Universal app.
  2. There is more flexibility in how I could port the common code between the 2 versions
  3. There is the ability to create different prices between the apps, in the event of certain new features only making sense on the iPad version e.g. the new blog display.

I understand some of you who have already bought the iPhone version will be disappointed to be asked to pay also for the iPad version.  However, hopefully you'll appreciate it was a significant amount of work to port an app of this type over - it wasn't just a case of stretching everything!

Finally I should say that development for the iPhone app will definitely continue, and I'm working on those suggestions and bug reports!

Thanks again for your support,

Tony

Screen_shot_2010-05-05_at_19.41.36 Journal Writing with Bluetooth keyboards

Included discreetly in the list of IOS 4.0 features was support for Bluetooth keyboards.  I thought I'd highlight this in relation to My Vacation because whilst the iPhone is great to have at hand to create your travelogue, not everyone has perfected 25wpm on the little keyboard.

It would be easy to slip in a bluetooth keyboard into your luggage, and use it when back at the hotel to write up your journal.

Frans, a user of My Vacation has done just that, and kindly shared a photo of it in use - thanks Frans!

The model in the picture is an iGo (former Stowaway) Think Outside Bluetooth.  From reviews online it'd appear to be a good choice.  A recent round-up of other options for Bluetooth keyboards can be found here.

AppleAppIcon Recent My Vacation Coverage

My Vacation has gone through an interesting few weeks, and it's heartening to see the app widen it's reach with most of the Summer still ahead of us.  Following the World Cup Calendar feature and the release of version 2.0, the app was mentioned by Macworld, and featured in 14 new App Stores in their New and Noteworthy lists, including the home country UK!  In fact the UK is now outselling the US.

Thanks to those who have posted suggestions.  Work is being done in parallel between and update to fix some bugs and a new iPad version (more on that later!).

All the best,

Tony

Send virtual postcards.

For any photo you can bring up a postcard view where you can enter in a message and even record some audio.  This can be sent as an email, and is attached as an 800x600 picture.  Further customisation is planned for future updates.

Send a journal straight from one My Vacation to another My Vacation via Wi-Fi or Bluetooth.

So, you're on your trip using My Vacation to craft your travel journal and a travelling companion asks "What's that?".  Well they can download My Vacation Lite for free and be sent your journal via local Wi-Fi or Bluetooth!  Then they can view your journal, or even collaborate in creating it.  This feature is also useful when you upgrade your iPhone, or buy an iPad and you want to transfer over your vacation journals.

Improved links related to your travel destination.

Some of you may not have stumbled across this feature, but when you click on 'where' from the main screen and click on a Location you can see various useful links.  You can see how this has been extended when you see the screenshot above.  The weather is improved by using an API by World Weather Online (http://www.worldweatheronline.com/).  There's also a tools page where you can see the local time supplied , currency rate supplied by Exchange Rate API (http://www.exchangerate-api.com), and a display of Google Translate's website.  There are also links to external websites that work well on an iPhone display.
