AppleAppIcon Recent My Vacation Coverage

My Vacation has gone through an interesting few weeks, and it's heartening to see the app widen it's reach with most of the Summer still ahead of us.  Following the World Cup Calendar feature and the release of version 2.0, the app was mentioned by Macworld, and featured in 14 new App Stores in their New and Noteworthy lists, including the home country UK!  In fact the UK is now outselling the US.

Thanks to those who have posted suggestions.  Work is being done in parallel between and update to fix some bugs and a new iPad version (more on that later!).

All the best,

Tony

Yes that's right folks!  A new version has just been approved by Apple with enough additional goodness to make it Version 2!  Here's a run-down.

  • Send a journal straight from one My Vacation to another My Vacation via Wi-Fi or Bluetooth.
  • Improved links related to your travel destination.
  • Slicker interface graphics (courtesy of Steve The Designer).
  • Videos can be uploaded to Facebook.
  • IOS 4.0 integration (and a fix to the camera issue to those who have encountered this since upgrading their iPhone 3GS).

Send virtual postcards.

For any photo you can bring up a postcard view where you can enter in a message and even record some audio.  This can be sent as an email, and is attached as an 800x600 picture.  Further customisation is planned for future updates.

Send a journal straight from one My Vacation to another My Vacation via Wi-Fi or Bluetooth.

So, you're on your trip using My Vacation to craft your travel journal and a travelling companion asks "What's that?".  Well they can download My Vacation Lite for free and be sent your journal via local Wi-Fi or Bluetooth!  Then they can view your journal, or even collaborate in creating it.  This feature is also useful when you upgrade your iPhone, or buy an iPad and you want to transfer over your vacation journals.

Improved links related to your travel destination.

Some of you may not have stumbled across this feature, but when you click on 'where' from the main screen and click on a Location you can see various useful links.  You can see how this has been extended when you see the screenshot above.  The weather is improved by using an API by World Weather Online (http://www.worldweatheronline.com/).  There's also a tools page where you can see the local time supplied , currency rate supplied by Exchange Rate API (http://www.exchangerate-api.com), and a display of Google Translate's website.  There are also links to external websites that work well on an iPhone display.

AppleAppIcon My Vacation on IOS 4

So how many of you have eagerly downloaded IOS 4 on their iPhones?  I was intending to write an article letting know what to expect.

Unfortunately I've got to start on a bad note for 3GS users.  With IOS 4 being able to run several apps at once (so a low memory situation), the update has exposed a problem with the code in My Vacation executed directly after a picture is taken, causing a crash.  I have isolated the problem, and am going to send an update out today and hopefully Apple will approve it in a week's time.

In the meantime if you have this problem, try running My Vacation with fewer other apps running.  The occurrence is fairly random.  I hope you can appreciate that the pre-release environment for IOS was not ideal for testing, and there have been reports of other apps having teething problems with IOS4.

Onto more positive issues:

1) ... the camera... yes I know what I just said above, but the camera is noticeably quicker.  Also the 5x zoom is worth discussing.  The camera control now has a digital zoom.  Photo enthusiasts may scoff at digital zoom, because it's rightly not a replacement for optical zoom.  However, doing some tests produced some interesting results with regard to use in My Vacation.  Here are two zoomed shots:

Zoomed out

3-4  Screen_shot_2010-06-22_at_11.40.46

Zoomed into the max

Both were taken with an iPhone 3GS, saving maximum photo size (2048x1536).  Both pictures are zoomed in on this web page for demonstration.  The difference between them is when taken on My Vacation the left hand side was not zoomed and the right hand side had maximum zoom.

So what can we take from this?  Well whilst the zoom is digital, it would seem the camera sensor can sample at higher than 2048x1536 (the maximum apps are allowed to get from the iPhone camera libraries).

Therefore, make use of the digital zoom!

2) Google maps - looks to be quicker too, and has 3D buildings in supported areas.  For instance in the example trip in Florence you can see the difference here:

3) Email.  I have received feedback from people that sending a lot of photos from email can cause problems.  The problem is that you can only send around 10Mb this way.  After that photos start becoming sent as empty.  My Vacation also suffered from running out of memory when exceeding 10Mb.

Now there seems to be more protection from the iPhone email system, which gives you a notice to reduce the size of the photos when sending from the app (and tells you the size).

4) Tap to focus video - seems to work well

5) Wireless keyboard support.  I haven't got a keyboard to try this out on, but I'm sure it will help writing those journals.  Let me know if you have got this working with My Vacation!

6) Multitasking / Quick switching.  My Vacation already remembered your last screen when launching.  However, a future update will properly embrace the new IOS 4 multitasking features.

7) Improved camera.  For those lucky to be getting a new iPhone, the camera will be a nice boost I'm sure.  For those users the large photo sizes taken in My Vacation should scale up to 2592x1944 (5 megapixel)

I'd be interested in hearing your feedback, and please accept my apologies if you are affected by the camera issue.

Screen_shot_2010-05-05_at_19.41.36 Blogging with My Vacation

I have recently been looking into how to best link travel journals on My Vacation to blog sites.  It would seem that the two biggest players are Blogger and Wordpress.  However, there is a new kid on the block (well a year old anyway) called Posterous that allows you to easily create a free blog.  The novel feature of this site is that it allows you to send emails to your blog, which then get converted into blog articles.

This means that here and now you can post your travel journals from My Vacation using the Email option and create your own blog post.  See how I have applied this to the example vacation from the app on a blog I created in Posterous.  Notice I have map links to each photo, but this is a new My Vacation feature yet to be released.  You can automatically set up your account to forward blog posts onto Wordpress or Blogger, as well as other sites.  Try for yourself, and let me know if you post anything via My Vacation!

Two things to point out:

  •  These photos were what the app terms as small (S) images.  Sending too many photos at once via email doesn't work too well.  Don't worry - I am looking at the API options for Posterous which will allow me to send each image, one by one to the site rather than all in one email.
  • Secondly, the email you send from the app only allows attachments to be added to the end of the message.  This is why you see the photos at the end of the blog, so some minor editing would required to put the photos in their correct place.

Any feedback on how to go forward with this will be appreciated.

Take care,

Tony
